Here’s how some people try to get their friends to meet with them to talk about their network marketing business: “Tom, can I come over to your house right now? You may or may not be interested, but it’ll just take about 15 minutes.”
Or here’s another classic: “Tom, I don’t have time to talk right now, but are you doing anything tomorrow night at eight? I have something important I have to show you.”
How does Tom respond to a telephone call like this? Sometimes with a “click,” but usually he’ll say something like, “Well gee Ed, this just isn’t a good time for me. We had relatives come in from out of town, our house burned down and we’ve all come down with smallpox.”
And so it goes.
There is a better way to get people to meet with you. Here are the Magic Eight Words: “Can I buy you a cup of coffee?”
That’s it. And it even works on people who aren’t coffee drinkers. They’ll let you buy them a cup of tea or a smoothie, a snowcone or whatever.
The point is, when you offer to buy someone a cup of coffee, they know you want to talk to them about something. They also know you are meeting them in a public place like Starbucks, so they aren’t going to get tied down for a long time.
Offering to buy someone a cup of coffee is the easiest, most low key, most non-threatening way to schedule a meeting I have ever found.
Next time you are in a coffee shop, look around. Notice how much business is being conducted there. Notice also, how informal the environment is.
In most people’s minds, a coffee shop is a casual place to meet, talk and do a little business. It is the perfect place to meet with prospects, show them your plan and get them to feel good about meeting with you.
So go forth, say those eight magic words, and buy someone a cup of coffee (or tea, or whatever).
