One of the most important elements in any network marketing business is…need I say the R word? OK yes it’s RECRUITING. There I said it. Having a funnel full of targeted prospects looking at your business is one of the key elements in building a successful network marketing business. Of course this is not new information. If you have been in network marketing for any amount of time you already know that. Normally when we find an eager prospect from our marketing efforts, we immediately shoot them as much information about our business opportunity as we possibly can. They will surely see that we have the greatest opportunity on the planet, and if they don’t, they just didn’t get it to begin with.
Well quess what? It may not have been them, more than likely if you approach your prospect with an on slot of information about your opportunity, the fault may be yours, not theirs. My fault you say. Hey I gave them all the information about my company that they needed to make an intelligent and informed decision, and they blew it.
My business trainer, Mike Dillard passed on a concept about recruiting that I want to share with you, and he got it from his mentor. “What MLM And Drills Have In Common?"
"Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill. They wanted a hole. Therefore, if you want to sell drills, you should advertise information about making holes – NOT information
about drills!" - Perry Marshall.
What that means is that our product is not what you and I as network markers think it is. People don’t care about your opportunity. They have not been waiting all their lives to be a Rep in your company. So it should not surprise you when they say “no thanks”. Well you say if they don’t care about my opportunity, what the heck do they care about? They care about finding a solution to their problem. Whether it is lack of money, lack of free time, or what ever. If you can position your opportunity as a solution to their problems, you are going to start hearing yes a lot more often.
Here is an excerpt from Mike Dillard’s newsletter explaining the above “Drill” concept.
The SOLUTION to your problem, is in the quote above, and here is what it means...
"Nobody who bought a drill, actually wanted a drill." - You didn't buy your MLM business because you wanted an MLM business.
"They wanted a hole." - You want more money, time, etc...
"Therefore, if you want to sell drills, you should advertise information about making holes – NOT information about drills!" - People don't want your biz, and don't like to be sold (they like to buy!).
So the best way to get them to buy your drill (your biz) is to sell them information on how to successfully create a hole (reach their goal).
In other words, you want to get your prospects to sell themselves on using your opportunity as the tool with which to accomplish their goals.
The best way to do that is to market and sell inexpensive information on how to drill a hole, faster, easier, and cheaper. After all, people would rather spend $20 to learn how to successfully do something, instead of $200 on a tool they are unsure about, and have never really used before.
Now, inside that inexpensive manual, you recommend using your drill, as the best possible way to create a hole! Now you're out of the picture. It is just them, selling themselves through the info contained in the book! You see people love to buy; they just have to do the selling themselves. Get it!? Good!
By marketing a "how to succeed" guide, you will take advantage of this aspect of human nature and increase the effectiveness of your prospecting immensely because you are taking a back-door approach. You don't come across as a sales person. Now your prospect sees you as a consultant, and expert, and you are offering people what they really want…a solution.
