Opting Out of a Power Team
By Bette Daoust, Ph.D.

If you want out, make sure you have your options spelled out ahead of time and make sure you do not burn your bridges. Every Power Team has changes, people move, they change careers, and they retire or take on a full-time job. Whatever the reason, these change should be welcomed. Your original contract should have a provision for leaving the group. The contract should also state what is expected regarding on-going contracts for replacement on the project. You want to make the transition for the person leaving easy but not so it becomes a burden on the remainder of the group. A group I was in had a clause that if we decide to leave we had to give thirty days notice and that we should suggest a replacement for them to interview. It also had a provision that the person leaving had to bring the new individual up to speed on any on-going projects.

We did have people that left and it was seamless to our customers. The remainder of the group did not feel they were going to have additional responsibilities they did not anticipate. Just remember that all of us should make sure we are expendable, that way when something happens, you can make quick changes.

A question I get asked quite often is how you remove a member that is not living up to their promise. I also answer that you need to have a provision for that in the contract. If you do your research ahead of time, you will not likely run into that situation but nonetheless you should be prepared in case it does happen. It is like having insurance.
