The Definition of Insanity in Your Network Marketing Business
By Merideth Cohrs

You've heard this quote before...

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
- Benjamin Franklin

But have you heard it in the context of your network marketing or home-based business? Probably not, and that ignorance is one of the leading causes of failure in this industry.

Traditional business owners will tell you the very real importance of creating a business plan, identifying a target market, tracking and split-testing advertising, evaluating and re-evaluating marketing techniques, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on because these bricks and mortar business owners are dependent on earning a profit to stay active and relevant with their consumer base. They simply cannot continue in business if their cost output exceeds their profit input for too many months.

Now, this is where you may be saying, "But my business only costs $10 a month to run...that's not applicable to me!" And this is where I tell you that your mindset is wrong. Not only is your mindset wrong, it is dangerous, and one of the top reasons so many people are unsuccessful in this industry.

Let me give you an example... Your business costs $10 a month and you purchase a set of low-cost leads from a lead broker for $200 a month. You do no other marketing that month because your "guaranteed traffic" will put you in profit right away. But what happens? You get zero return on your investment... No one signs up for your business and no one buys your product. What's next? Sadly, instead of making the smart business choice to move on to a different form of advertising, many people will stick with the very same method in the hopes that it will work out the next time. They were told by their sponsor or their team that this method ALWAYS works, and they believe it. They don't trust the results right before their eyes.

** I want to make it clear that I'm not bashing all lead companies in that example...there are several that are reputable and consistent in their results, but very few of these offer 5000 leads for $10. Make sense? **

Ok, so what should you have done in that example? Tell the world that your business is a scam because you did not make a million dollars in your first week? No! You take a step back and actually evaluate what you did and why it did not produce the desired result. You then invest some of your TIME and BRAIN POWER in a method of advertising that DOES consistently produce results...e-zine advertising, writing articles, participating in forums, generating your own leads, etc.

This article is not about how to advertise in those mediums, so I will not go into further detail here. But please use your common sense when you build your business. Stop doing something that you know to be ineffective and start doing something with the potential to move your business in a forward direction. Stop being insane...
